Galley Floor Storage
Hull #48 was one of the first (if not the first) to have the batteries
relocated under the aft berth. I wanted to change the electrical
system anyway. Below is what I did:
I had ordered an inverter/charger in lieu of the charger, but I was
informed because I ordered the 8kw generator they do not put in
an inverter. This was ludicrous in my opinion, but my retrofit was
better than what I would have received anyway.
The first thing I did was to cut out the storage bin under the galley
floor and the one under the galley sink. My friends on the dock
thought I was crazy taking a saw zall to my boat one week after
receiving it. I then installed 8 post buss bars in the battery area
under the aft berth. (The way it was hooked up was a mess with
adapters on adapters, some was from the primary electric
winches I had installed by the factory.)
I put all 3 8D batteries on one house bank. Using the extra 00
battery cable to put the electric winches on there own circuit.
(When I took position of the boat, when ever you used the
primary winch it would knock the radar off line due to low
voltage). Next I installed a Xantrex MS2000 true sine wave
inverter/charger under the galley floor directly under the
refrigeration unit and ran 0000 battery cables to house bank.
I also installed 2 X Group 31 start batteries under the Freezer and
drawer in the same space I cleared out. I also switched the
switches the 1,2,all is on the start batteries for the engine and
generator, and the on/off switch is for the house. I also replaced
the standard 80 amp alternator with a 110 amp balmar 70 series
alternator with a three stage regulator connected to the house. I
also installed an balmar duo charger for the start batteries. The
Charles Marine 60 Amp charger was connected to the two start
batteries.
The space under the galley floor holds my Inverter/Charger, 2
start batteries, and 5 milk crates of storage. The hatch in the
floor was too heavy for my girlfriend to open with here bad back
so I put a hinge and a gas shock to make it more accessible.
On my 30 day shake down cruise I found some things I would/will
change:
I would put a Xantrex MS3000 in instead. The charger output of
the 2000 is 100 amps and the batteries can take more, so the
3000 has an 150 amp charger.
I also plan to block the end towards the engine because I lost a
few cans to the bilge.
